In Feb 2013 I made a last minute decision to go back to a race I had come to love – the Yukon Arctic Ultra. Pulling a sled was no longer an option having damaged my back in 2011 so it would have to be by bike. I knew I could ride 100 miles within the 3 day time limit on the road, but over snow and ice?
I didn’t have a suitable bike or the right kit. Fat bikes were a new concept and there were few around. We found a Surly Pugsley at Charlie the Bikemonger and I borrowed kit and had lots of excellent advice from Andy Heading and Al Sheldon.
Conditions in the race were tough for biking – more pushing than walking in the early stages – so it was hard but I loved it.
